Greetings, NAPPN Members.

It was wonderful seeing many of you last week in Tucson. We are
writing to *follow
up on the request for Affinity Groups* and to *share an announcement from
the NSF* concerning an RFP that may be relevant to some of you.

*1. Affinity Groups:* Please send an email message to Darwin Campbell at
darwin at iastate.edu to express your interest to lead a NAPPN affinity group.
The current list of groups and their leaders is shown below. If you want to
organize a group or if you volunteered to lead a group and are not shown in
the list, please let Darwin know and he will follow up with you.
   Robotics - Amy Tabb
Diversity and Inclusion - Argelia Lorence
   Photosynthesis - Zbigniew Kolber
   Software Interoperability - David Lebauer

*2. NSF announcement* for "Harnessing the Data Revolution Big Idea." Please
see details below (thanks to Cliff Weil at PGRP for thinking of our
community to share this news).

Dear Colleagues

I am a member (along with Karen Cone) of the Harnessing the Data Revolution
Big Idea working group. The recent lapse in appropriations disrupted our
role-out of a key part of this initiative: one solicitation was released
just prior to shutting down giving us no opportunity to do proper outreach
and another release was delayed. The effect was that much of the response
that came in during the furlough period lacked sufficient representation
from the science (ie non-technical) communities. To address this situation,
the working group had extended the deadlines and is stepping up the
outreach with a webinar to be held this Friday. We in BIO have drafted the
attached letter which we encourage you to distribute to your communities.
This letter has also been posted on our blog at:

if you wish to simply distribute the URL.

NSF’s Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) is a national-scale activity to
enable new modes of data-driven discovery that will allow fundamental
questions to be asked and answered at the frontiers …

The success of the Institutes track of HDR is dependent on the
identification of the right science questions where advances in new data
analytics will have the most significant impact. Strong voices to speak for
biology will ensure that BIO maximizes its benefit from this activity.
Therefore we encourage all members of the BIO community to consider
participating in HDR in one of the alternate solicitations described in
this communication. Feel free to contact Karen or I if you have any
questions.

Thanks!

Peter
