Subject: TERRA-REF Community Update and DARPA invitation

Dear NAPPN members,

This is an exciting year for the TERRA-REF <http://www.terraref.org/> program!
We are now transitioning from developing the data collection and processing
pipelines to documenting and publishing datasets. In the next few months we
will begin releasing some of our datasets that we have collected from the
sorghum field trials carried out under the field scanner in Maricopa, AZ.

While we are still working to publish complete curated datasets, we have a
few sample public datasets that allow users to explore the types of data
that we have. For those of you eager to get started exploring these data we
would like to introduce you to two new resources:

1) Sample datasets that we have prepared for review and feedback:
terraref.org/sample-data
2) A set of tutorials introducing how to access these data using R and
python: terraref.org/tutorials

*Also,* please see below for an invitation to work with the TERRA-REF
datasets with DARPA this summer.

*Invitation to Explore TERRA Data and Test DARPA Technology!*

Parenthetic, a small company in Washington, DC, is looking for people
who are interested in participating in a cutting-edge research program
called D3M <https://www.darpa.mil/program/data-driven-discovery-of-models>.

The goal of the program is to create software that helps plant science
Subject Matter Experts, like yourself, build better machine learning models
(but without knowing how to do machine learning). We will be using the
TERRA-REF datasets to test this software.

For this project, Parenthetic participates in the evaluation of this
software by finding end users to exercise the systems and provide them with
feedback. We are running one of these evaluations in August 2019.

*What it requires:*
*A few hours of your time -- mostly on demand/you pick a day and there is
the option for doing this in the evening.
*Evaluation is all done web-based with one or two brief dial-ins.
*A brief training and following a set of instructions to access a software
tool and answer a research question we provide you with. Good news: there
is no wrong answer... the entire setup is designed to test the tool, not
the person using it.
*Provide us your feedback via forms we provide in a web-based portal.

*What you get:*
- $100 gift card
- a cool resume point (we can provide a blurb about consultation on a DARPA
program)

Sign-up is here: http://www.parenthetic.io/studies/ Quick FYI, the
submission webform doesn’t have a confirmation page, but we have
successfully received your info once you hit “Subscribe"
Referral Code is: 2019D3MTERRA

After signing up, we'll send information about the mid-August evaluation
and date options.

Thank you!
Nadia
